    Clean Energy Trainer

Experiment Set for Energy Generation, Storage and Supply

This experiment set introduces users to renewable energies and their combination with hydrogen fuel cell technology. It illustrates the complete energy chain including generation, conversion, storage and supply.

Extensive instructional materials, prepared experiments and learning and experimentation software make it easy to learn about the individual technologies – solar, wind, hydrogen, fuel cell – and how they can be combined.

    • Solar, wind and hydrogen components can be used separately
    • PC-supported measurement and experimentation
    • Extensive training and experimenting instructions
    • Modular design with adjustable and/or scalable components
    • Software-based simulation of weather conditions and load profiles
    • USB data monitor with electronic load and adjustable power supply
    • Manual and automatic generation of characteristic curves
    • Magnetic baseplate for easy setup

Computer not included in the package

    Components

    Solar Module (2 pieces)

The 4-cell solar module uses solar power to generate electrical energy that can be used to supply the electrolyzer or other loads. The module can be positioned in one of three preset angles.

    Electrolyzer (2 pieces)

The electrolyzer uses electrical energy to produce hydrogen by separating water into hydrogen and oxygen. It is operated with distilled water and requires no caustic solutions or acids.

    USB Data Monitor

The USB Data Monitor is used for data acquisition, as an electronic load or as a power supply for the electrolyzer. It is connected to the computer and software through the USB port.

    Photometer

The photometer is used to measure light intensity and to conduct detailed experiments with solar energy.

    Load

The load simulates an electric consumer. Two integrated lamps enable experiments with different loads.

    Accessories

    • Lamp The special double spotlight simulates sunlight. It provides the optimal light spectrum the solar module needs to achieve optimal output levels.
    • Wind Generator The 6-bladed wind generator uses wind power to generate electrical energy. It directly supplies the electrolyzer or other loads. Both the angle and number of its blades can be varied to understand their effect on power generation.
    • Hydrogen Storage (2 pieces) The hydrogen produced by the electrolyzer is stored in the hydrogen storage (30 ml). A scale on the storage shows how much hydrogen is produced and consumed.
    • Fuel Cell Stack The 5-cell fuel cell stack uses hydrogen and oxygen to generate electrical energy. The number of cells can be changed to conduct different experiments with various energy demands.
    • Anemometer The anemometer is used to measure wind speed. It helps users understand how wind speed affects a wind generator’s output. All items can be stored in the durable, stackable storage box.
    • Fan The desktop fan simulates wind. It provides the optimal airflow for operating the wind generator. Three different power levels extend the experimenting possibilities.
    • Teaching Material
    • Software The Software allows users to:
    • Investigate each component
    • Investigate renewable energy chains – as source or load simulator
    • Measure operating parameters
    • Visualize data in tables and graphs
    • Generate characteristic curves manually and automatically
    • Simulate different weather and load profiles for experimentation

The output of wind and solar systems depends on local weather conditions. That means that any wind, solar or storage capacity has to be adjusted accordingly. The software enables users to simulate two scenarios:

Easy preparation of lessons and experiments:

    • 15 experiments with photocopiable materials
    • Experiments for groups and individuals
    • Prepared experiments include:
    • Graphic presentation of experiment setup
    • Worksheet with questions and tasks for students
    • Teacher answer sheet
    • CD-ROM with experiment sheets
    • Weather Simulation The user selects a level of wind force and solar irradiation (low, middle, high) and simulates the number of solar modules and wind generators installed. This creates a source profile of the energy provided and allows the electrolyzer and storage capacity to be adapted to handle the input.
    • Load Simulation The user selects different usage levels for a set of home appliances – an air conditioner, computer, lamp, stove. The obtained load profile serves as basis for adapting the energy conversion and storage components according to the simulated power requirements.
    • Sample Experiments
    • Dimension renewable energy sources to load profiles in an optimal way
    • Produce hydrogen from renewable energy sources
    • Get to know wind generators & solar cells
    • Operate multiple loads with fuel cells
    • Observe water’s properties during electrolysis
    • Calculate the efficiency of energy components
    • Determine characteristic curves
    • Investigation of Single Components
    • Weather and Load Simulation
