Take a few moments to listen to different sounds with your child (perhaps the sound of rain, wind, sirens or aeroplanes). Pick out one of the sounds - can your child describe it in words? Encourage them to describe it in different ways. At first they might say 'it was loud' or 'it was quiet', but the harder they listen, the more they might be able to add other descriptions: 'it was low and growly ... it sounded slow'. Switch on the radio: can they talk about the sound of voices in the same way? (Information from the Parents Centre)
