Quality of Schooling Depends on a Great Teacher

Opinion / November 24, 2014

One of the greatest dilemmas facing parents and teachers is as old as the hills. Despite endless changes in social situations and government educational policies parents and teachers are required to seek out the best schools to further their prospects.

One of the greatest dilemmas facing parents and teachers is as old as the hills. Despite endless changes in social situations and government educational policies parents and teachers are required to seek out the best schools to further their prospects.

Despite hundreds of years of educational evolution the prospects for all children to receive a good education remains disappointingly fragile. Parents relocate within catchment areas of good schools, the wealthy pay substantial fees to enlist their children in top independent schools. But there are two unassailable constants; one is the quality of the teacher, the other is the luck of the pupil to enjoy being taught by such a teacher.

The teaching facilities, buildings, location and educational structure pall into insignificance when compared to a high quality teacher with a natural skill and ability. Yet there are precious few around and therefore luck plays a huge part in any child’s education.

The state system has as self-destruct element. The nature or nurture hovering in the DNA of any teacher can be destroyed by the state manipulation of the schooling process, be it unrealistic attainment targets, temporary educational initiatives or underfunded projects requiring budget cutbacks.

The precious 10 years of a child’s formal education can set the scene for their entire adult life. Let us hope that there may be one child, currently in school, that will have the wisdom and character to develop an entirely new form of education. This way we can demonstrate that mankind can land a space probe on a tiny comet millions of miles away, as well as develop an educational system that is fit for purpose and will track with developments on this wide world of ours. As scientists have developed the space probe, let teachers develop the schooling process.
