We are very grateful to Sam Field who spotted some howlers in the original version of this article. We managed to commit the cardinal sin of publishing the outline rough draft instead of the final article! We are still completing the detention and promise to try harder in future. Keen2learn

This is so true. Children are incredible adaptive and are more likely to learn quickly when parents don't put expectations and obstacles in front of them. I'm a father of 5 and the owner of balancebikes4kids.com We've seen time and again that children who are allowed to experiment on a balance bike, quickly learn the most important skill - balance. From there they master steering and are ready to move on to a pedalled bike.

This happens naturally and often without any adult involvement. It just requires a little practice.

I write on business and environmental issues and agree that the volcanic ash episode poses some interesting questions for the green energy movement. I recently published this article called “Beware of Greens Bearing Gifts” which explained why I am sceptical of the economic benefits of the green agenda, even though it is important.

On two levels, EYFS must be one of the most preposterous pieces of legislation by this government. It is quite incredulous that a group of apparent experts in their field could produce such a complex and largely unattainable policy and set of targets. Some of the 69 so-called Early Learning Goals are, quite frankly, laughable; well, they would be if this weren't such a crucial subject. Who has the right to enforce 'learning' on newborns? And for them to say it's all through play is to miss the point, whether it is or not. And what about the undervalued and oft-maligned childminders profession? Numbers are consistently falling and it's no surprise. To require childminders to somehow work out from the scores of pages of instruction how they are supposed to record and 'teach' at the same time as carrying out the caring bit, and all that entails, is, frankly, ludicrous. There simply aren't enough hours in the day, even supposing they were appropriately qualified.

I really feel for teachers. The respect for their job has been undermined by social changes that bode ill for the future. Can you imagine what the 5 year old who challenges the teacher will be like when the grow up.

I agree that school premises should be utilised more, not only for mainstream full-time education but for adult courses. School holidays need not mean a complete shut down. The "shift" proposal is worthy of further consideration. However, there would be an increase in school-run traffic and implications for parents who work "normal" hours.

I think it's great idea to operate school buildings in a shift system but unlike the Malaysians our parents would be in absolute uproar if it ever happened. Everybody seems to be telling the political pollsters that they think education is a vital issue, but the unspoken truth is that, given the choice, rather than have a huge improvement in our state schools, most British men would actually choose the option of seeing their football team promoted and most women would prefer the option of having a smaller bum. Not so in Kuala Lumpur!
