Countdown

Friday, December 29th, 2006

Key to the success in SAT’s 11+ and GCSE is a combination of knowledge and confidence but above all is the ability to answer the questions in a set time. Practise at home helps tremendously and many of the keen2learn products are ideal games to complete against the clock. Children really enjoy improving their score time and you can see the improvement in ability and confidence being made, something that is not always practical at school when a degree of equipment sharing is necessary.

The Nitrogen Cycle

Friday, December 29th, 2006

The preparation of a field towards growing a healthy crop is an essential role of the farmer. Alongside ploughing, harrowing, weeding etc. and fertilising the soil, there is one further ingredient that has a dramatic improvement in the performance of the crop yield. The addition of nitrogen, induced by growing previous root crops rich in nitrogen nourishes the crop significantly enhancing the crop yield.
Unless you’re a farmer the nitrogen cycle is probably something you last heard of in a science lesson at school, but there is a strong analogy between growing crops and children. Arguably the use of “nitrogen” in the schooling process to improve a child’s performance has been generally overlooked!
The teachers’ efforts can be significantly enhanced through adding some “nitrogen” rich parental support. The knowledge, maturity and wisdom of a parent and equally a Grandparent can be harnessed at home to reinforce lessons and complement the achievement at school.
Spending time with a child practising lessons in their own time builds their confidence and comprehension. It also builds your knowledge of the National Curriculum allowing you to be part of a continuous farming process rather than a sudden spurt at parents night. The resultant healthy crop leads to significantly wider understanding that the unnourished comparison.

Hands on as well as hands up

Friday, December 29th, 2006

Modern teaching tools and educational games are designed by educational experts to provide the hands-on experience essential to effective learning and child development. From spelling games; maths games; literacy games through to GCSE revision packs they provide an enjoyable approach to learning. They also lead to the development of confidence sometimes untapped in the clamour of a busy classroom.

Ask any child how they learnt how to operate a mobile phone, MP3 player, computer or games consol. Probably not just from looking at a whiteboard at the front of a classroom or the hand book. The key is spending time operating the unit themselves practicing until their confidence builds up, and then of course they need a new phone as they have outgrown all the features of that “old” one. Think how their confidence can be built using educational toys that are curriculum approved to complement the key stages, and give your child the greatest opportunity in any future assessment.

Is that the bell already?

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006

The average single lesson length at secondary school is around 40 minutes ( key stages 3 and 4 ). Allow 5 minutes settling down time at the start, 10 minutes dealing with some unruly elements, 5 minutes setting homework at the end and you are left with a core teaching time of 20 minutes. Think how this can be augmented at home through the use of the same teaching resources used in class. Supplementing the 1:30 sharing in class, your child can enjoy a 1:1 interaction with your support at home. Using similar teaching resources used in school you can help them to develop confidence in key stage numeracy, literacy, maths, English, Science in a fun way.

Educational Visits

Sunday, December 24th, 2006

One of the greatest ways of reinforcing learning is to put it into practise. Keen2learn uses the “practise doing” as the essence to learning. One of the best ways to bring subjects such as history, science and maths to life is to put them into practise by seeing them in action at an attraction with a high educational content. Turn a day out into a constructional and highly enjoyable way of reinforcing lessons in a practical manner.

A little bit of time planning the visit by exploring the locations website in advance allows you to map out what you want to see and emphasise the content in context. We have constructed a list of the better locations to visit, these can be found here. If there any in your region that you feel should be added please do send us an email.
